Algis Skačkauskas (1955–2009) can rightly be called Lithuania’s Marc Chagall (1887–1985), although there were other artists in Lithuania who also tried to follow the famous Paris School Litvak. But Skačkauskas was the most successful, although his coryphaei were different artists. His emotional attitude connected him with Chagall, and his extraordinary talent helped him to convey this. Perhaps there was something special in the soul of the Lithuanian artist that also nurtured small-town Jewish culture. This is no surprise, for Skačkauskas himself was born and grown up in a small East European village Pranapolis, and was even successful at writing pithy romances. He liked composing poetry: the song ‘Anzelmute’, popularised by the group Biplan, came from his freely-flowing pen.
