As powerful as Mother Earth herself, The mother by Stasys Ušinskas (1905–1974) stands out in the context of Lithuanian art at the turn of the 1920s and 1930s by its radical modernism. As a composition, this picture grew out of the canvas The family, painted in Paris in 1930 and now in the collection of the M.K. Čiurlionis National Art Museum. Like The family and the composition Farmers of Pakruojis, painted in 1937, The mother shows the artist’s attempts to break away occasionally from portraying bathers, which is typical of Art Deco, and to remember the rural origins of his family, by using his favourite means of expression.
