This is one of her early paintings, when she began to use brighter colours and more artistic contrasts of light and shade, while rendering a truthful picture. She aimed to achieve a pleinair likeness and a more liberal approach to painting, by combining soft painterly patches. Katiliūtė was inspired by the atmosphere of Marseille. She was glad when she arrived there: ‘In France, in the port of Marseille, I saw a sea that was quite different to the Baltic Sea, and wished to paint the sky and the water. New ideas came to my mind, together with colours that were plain and unusual to me...’
