After finishing his studies at Kaunas School of Art, the sculptor Juozas Kėdainis (1915–1988) moved to Vilnius in 1951 and lectured at the State Institute of Art. He made some lively sketches in Vilnius. In one of them, he captured a view of Užupio Street, at the point where the sculpture of the Angel of Užupis stands today. The picturesque relief of the quarter is revealed from the hill: a winding cobbled street, a glimpse of the Old Town, and the towers of churches and bell towers protruding above the horizon. By means of swift and relaxed drawing, the artist has captured the character of the old and chaotic Užupis area. It is a fleeting glimpse, as if printed in a photograph, of traffic, passers-by carrying bundles, the back of a woman wrapped in a shawl, a passing Pobeda car, and other incidental details, which recreate the postwar atmosphere in Vilnius.
