Marija Cvirkienė (1912–2004) liked to paint landscapes and still-lifes. She combined the two by painting a still-life opening on to a landscape. According to her biographer Dalia Ramonienė, when she was painting still-lifes against a landscape, ‘their main elements were pushed aside, and were not highlighted, either by size or by colour’ (D. Ramonienė, Marija Cvirkienė, Vilnius: Vaga, 1992, p. 8). However, the vase of flowers in the picture in the Ellex Valiunas collection, even if it is pushed to one side, dominates the composition. On the other hand, it is evident that the most important aspect to both the artist and the viewer is the sweet melancholy which pervades the shore of the lake, the trees, and the room with a vase of flowers on the windowsill.
