Kazimierz Stabrowski studied at St Petersburg Academy of Art between 1887 and 1894, and was sent to Turkey and Palestine in 1892 to gather material for his diploma paper ‘Mahomet in the Desert’, for which he received a gold medal. There, the painter was charmed by Cappadocia. As if arising from the ancient past, the sights told a tale of how the very first Christians hid in caves, building habitable labyrinths and cities with churches and monasteries. Out of 365 churches and monasteries in Cappadocia decorated with wall paintings by the ancient residents, only 30 have survived. Under a green canopy (1901) - this is a detail of a lost city in the impressive Cappadocia caves. Stabrowski shows it in the shade, against the background of a green landscape, thus strengthening the impression of the dead ancient city and its ghostly shape. The magnificent, lifeless ancient city, abandoned and covered with a green floral carpet, tells a visual tale about the culture and spirit of long-forgotten ancient history. The picture emanates a mysterious mood characteristic of Symbolism.
