A Branch

Author: Kazys Venclovas (g. 1962)
Created:1993
Material:bronze
Dimensions:48 × 17 cm

This sculpture by Kazys Venclovas (b. 1962) is from his early creative period, during which he explored the relationship between man and nature, drawing inspiration from natural forms. It is one of his ‘collage’ sculptures, where he combines forms derived from real objects found in nature with shapes he has sculpted. Using elements such as a tree root, a branch, or a dried pigeon skeleton found in an attic, the sculptor casts these items in bronze, giving a sense of eternity to the authentic forms of nature, and melding them with man-made forms. This piece is a cast of a real branch, integrated with a jagged bronze ‘impression’ of the artist’s hand, formed by squeezing soft plasticine in his fist, leaving a clear handprint on the surface. The sculpture harmoniously merges man and nature, illustrating their coexistence in a single piece.
