Another medieval side street, Šv Kazimiero Street (in Soviet times it was called J. Vito Street, after the revolutionary hero Juozas Vitas), was an object of particular interest for artists. It has a large and charming two-storey arch with a room inside, which holds up the walls of the houses on either side of the street. Šv Kazimiero Street leads up to the arch, and the slope highlights its bulkiness. The graphic artist Jonas Klimanskas (19321996) depicted the subject at night: the street is dark, except for the arch and the wall on the right, which is illuminated by light from an obscure source. By means of fine and gentle lines, he has conveyed the disturbing atmosphere of the city at night, with wet and shimmering cobbles, and a lonely passer-by disappearing under the arch. The woodcut expresses the fearful mood of postwar Soviet Vilnius.
