This picture by Algirdas Petrulis (1915–2010) was bought as a 60th birthday present on 12 February 1961 by the Lithuanian SSR Society of Art for Juozas Mikėnas (1901–1964), a professor at the Lithuanian SSR State Institute of Art.
A still-life with flowers was a popular gift for middle-class Soviet town dwellers, and the choice of objects depicted in the picture was typical of the times too. Oddly enough, fans were quite popular in postwar Lithuania, and were often used on hot summer days. The fashion went back to prewar times, and was kept going by holidays in the Crimea, and the influence of the culture in Russian cities, mainly Moscow and Leningrad.
