The artist of this picture of Užupis is unknown, but he was one of the Lithuanian artists who in 1939 or 1940 came to the historic capital that had just been reinstated and painted it. The artist looked at the River Vilnia and its banks from a low vantage point in the suburb of Paplauja. The painter was attracted by the natural and picturesque quality of the riverside, the swiftly flowing river full of stones, houses with extensions and fences around them, the high sandy bank, and various other details: sewerage pipes, and a canoe for water sports left on the bank. This secluded corner of Vilnius, drawn from nature in the summer by an experienced hand during the Second World War, indicates that the artist found a remote and quiet spot where he could forget the perils and the hardships of war.
