Between the wars, Adolf Popławski (19071982) made woodcuts of views of Vilnius and exhibited them. The engraving A view of St Anne’s and the Bernardine Church in Vilnius was shown at an exhibition of work by Vilnius artists in 1940. Popławski tried to avoid stereotypes, and found an unusual angle of view: he looked down on the churches like a bird, showing not only their playful layout, but also their surroundings, with the greenery of the park behind them.
