A corner of Vilnius

An old corner of Vilnius that is much loved by artists is the narrow Bernardinų Street, which runs from Pilies to Maironio Street. The framing, the lighting, the seasons and the time of day vary in the different pictures by different artists, but the graceful curve of the street is always the same. J. Faszowicz chose a clear day, when the sun in a deep blue sky cast a bright light on one side of the street, leaving the other in shadow. He put various objects together, expressing the depth of the street through linear perspective, and achieving a modern and scenic look through even and plain paintwork, without any modelling of the shapes. The style is characteristic of early 20th-century painting, and it is distinguished by its Art Nouveaustyle lines and its simple and subtle green, yellow and brown colours.
