Periodical TYGODNIK ILLUSTROWANY (Warsaw).
Woodcut after Michał Elwiro Andriolli.
This woodcut, based on a view by Andriolli, was made by Edward Gorazdowski (1843–1901), an accomplished late 19th-century engraver, who worked for illustrated magazines in Warsaw. It appeared in Tygodnik Illustrowany (1872, no. 72) after Andriolli’s return from exile, and was later reproduced in other publications. The view of Vilnius from Saltoniškių Hill represents a painful look of farewell on the road leading to Ukmergė and Russia. The churches are bathed in dramatically changing light, stormy clouds race across the sky, and an unforgiving wind tears branches off trees and bushes.
