When back in Lithuania, J. Šileika wasfascinated with the valleys of the Nemunas and painted five landscapes of its
riversides within one year, which he showed in an exhibition in 1923. J. Šileika first observed the chosen object and changes in the lighting while trying to feel the unity of colours and the strongest impression. Then he painted – intensively, with inspiration, and quickly. The picture looks as if painted at a stroke, effortlessly and accurately: it is alive, dynamic and comforting. Its composition is firm and without any unexpected details. J. Šileika’s pictures emanate good mood – they have no gloomy skies or grey muffled colours.
