Lithograph by Adolphe Bayot (1810–1866) based on A visit to Tyszkiewicz by Antanas Zaleskis (1824–1885), from Jan Kazimierz Wilczyński’s Album de Wilna (Album of Vilnius, series II, fascicle 5, No. 58).
The book ‘Recollections’ by the nobleman Jan Chryzostom Pasek about 17thcentury military expeditions was published by Edward Raczyński in 1836. It was written in lively and vivid language, full of wisecracks and humour, and was very popular. Pasek thus became a hero of works of art. Antanas Zaleskis (1824– 1885), who owned land around present-day Kaišiadorys, was one of the illustrators of Pasek’s adventures. Dynamic figure compositions suited Wilczyński’s Album de Wilna as illustrations of Lithuanian history. Still-lifes form important features of the composition and theme of this lively scene: the weapons leaning against the wall on the right of the picture, the jugs and bottles in the centre of the picture, with glasses raised high by revellers, and a tray with more drinks for the merry company held by a servant on the left. The mood of jolly carousing is augmented by an overturned chair, a sword kicked under the table, and a hat thrown on the floor. The viewer should note the decorations that were indispensable in the home of a true nobleman: a decorative frieze with scenes from Antiquity, portraits of ancestors, and armour and a hunting trophy on the wall.
