The Lithuanian historian, archaeologist, ethnographer and collector Count Konstanty Tyszkiewicz (1806–1868) undertook an expedition sailing down the River Neris in 1857. It was the longest and most famous journey of exploration in the former Grand Duchy of Lithuania in the 19th century. After Tyszkiewicz’s death, through the efforts of his son Oscar, the book ‘The River Neris and its Banks’ was published by Józef Ignacy Kraszewski’s printing press in Dresden in 1871. It was the first large-scale attempt to undertake such complex research and describe Lithuania’s rivers and riverbanks.
The illustrations and decoration for the book were created by the artists Antoni Zaleski and Konstanty Januszewicz. The xylographer Wilhelm Werthmann made wood engravings based on drawings by these artists.
