The still-life by Bolesław Bałzukiewicz (18791935), consisting of a plaster or porcelain statuette of a contemplative angel, a silver-gilt teapot in a straw holder, a silver-gilt compote, and an unfolded letter in the soft yellowish light of a lamp placed on a small curved Rococo-style table, all comprises a very important part of this figure composition. The selection of objects clearly tells a sensuous story, the heroes of which are the woman in a white satin dress sitting in a bluish silk armchair, and the object of her dreams, who is invisible to us. The light coat thrown over the armrest and the rich bouquet of white flowers fire our imagination, about a warm evening, about our heroine just returning to her elegant and comfortable house from the theatre or a party, or just about to go out. She has met, or is going to meet, the person who has written the letter that we can see in the light of the lamp. There may be various possible stories, but everything tells of a longing for love, and the promise of its fulfilment.
