Ars libri I 2022

Art album Ars libri.

Compiler: Algimantas Muzikevičius
Introduction: Prof. Arvydas Pacevičius
Authors: Rolandas Gustaitis, Algimantas Muzikevičius

Vilnius, Ellex Valiunas, 2022.

The collection of old books of the law firm Ellex Valiunas reflects book culture stamped with the marks of prominent Lithuanian personalities, from King Sigismund Augustus and the higher echelons of the aristocracy and the clergy to participants in the National Revival and the builders of the Lithuanian state, such as Eustachy Tyszkiewicz, Jonas Basanavičius and Jurgis Šaulys. This tradition of respect for the book continued into the interwar period with the 27th Book Lovers’ Society, and it is fostered in present-day Lithuania by collectors who value history and care about the national awareness of Lithuanian citizens. The law firm Ellex Valiunas can justly claim to be one of the most outstanding of these collectors. It is the only institution in Lithuania today with such a wide-ranging private collection of old Lithuanian manuscripts and publications of such historical value. Its sponsors, staff and researchers are constantly engaged in studying and publicising the collection. The volume Ars libri is a great gift to the public, of which both the creators and the owners of the collection deserve to be very proud.
