Stories of Litvak Art I 2023

Compiler and author: Vilma Gradinskaitė
Vilnius, Ellex Valiunas, 2023. Print run of 1000 copies

The Stories of Litvak Art present an extensive collection of Litvak works. It not only includes works by the earliest pioneers, such as Mark Antokolsky, Isaac Levitan and Mozes Maimon, but also presents creations by contemporary artists who uphold the traditions of Litvak art, such as Augustinas Savickas, Adomas Jacovskis and Solomonas Teitelbaumas. At the heart of the collection are pieces by artists who attended the Vilnius School of Drawing between 1866 and 1915, including Joseph Budko, Benzion Zukerman, Jehudo Meier Epstein, Yehoshua Kovarsky, Lazar Krestin, Jacques Lipchitz and Jakob Szer. A special mention is made of Boris Schatz, who studied at this school, and who in 1906 established the Bezalel School of Arts and Crafts in Palestine, the first art institution in the region. Another no less significant part of the collection is devoted to the Paris School (L’École de Paris), featuring works by prominent artists such as Pinchus Abramovich, Arbit Blatas, Max Band and Pinchus Krémègne.
